Best Steering Wheel Covers

Do you not like your current steering wheel feel? Is it getting too hot in summer or feels cold to touch throughout winter? We have reviewed 4 of the best steering wheel covers available of varying materials to see what comes out on top.

We have reviewed a faux leather steering wheel cover, a genuine leather steering wheel cover, a flax cloth wrap steering wheel cover and a pink one, hopefully you like our reviews and the covers themselves.

So why put a cover over your current steering wheel? Well, our little Fiat Panda, as much as we love it, has a really hard, plasticy feeling wheel. It’s thin, can get sticky under your hands and palms in summer and just not the best to feel, especially for long distance driving, there are a few reasons we thought we would test some different covers and stick with what we like.

The leather cover feels fabulous and if you have a poor finished steering wheel, this could be the upgrade for you. There is also a faux leather/microfiber cover which if you are against using animals products you may like. It feels comfortable and good on a steering wheel. There is also the pink steering wheel cover for a funky upgrade, it’s very cheap so you can’t go much wrong if you want this look and feel and one of our favourites, the flax cloth, this was just different and we loved it.

Tip For Fitting A Steering Wheel Cover

If you are having difficulty fitting your cover, first make sure you buy the correct size and secondly, try and fit it on a warm day.

It’s a lot like fitting a bicycle tyre, grab some small cable ties as you will need these to help you with fitting. Either put the cover on a warm radiator or put it on the bonnet of your car for 10+ minutes in the sun. This will help it expand a little and become more flexible, which is what you need to get it on.

With fitting, put it around your steering wheel as far as you can get it by hand. Once you have it so far, put a cable tie at this point were you just have it wrapped around, this is to secure it from coming off as you get the rest of it on. Grab a screw driver and push in between the cover and the outside of your steering wheel, then move the screwdriver towards the centre of your steering wheel, which will move and pull the cover on to the outside of the wheel. Fit another cable tie and repeat the process, this will definitely help with getting a tight steering wheel cover fitted to your steering wheel.

Do You Use A Steering Wheel Lock

If you do, make sure it has a large opening where it wraps itself around your steering wheel, will a thicker steering wheel fit in to the bit that locks around it? We did some testing of steering wheel locks and a couple that we tested would struggle to lock themselves around a steering wheel with a new cover on.

Not Just for Cars

These steering wheel covers will fit perfectly on most vans, trucks and other vehicles with a standard sized steering wheel. If you’re looking for a van steering wheel cover, look no further.

We have ranked the leather steering wheel cover and the vibrant flax cloth as 1st and 2nd because they feel the best out of the 4 we have ranked, they both fit great and don’t slip so the feel to us is what comes first. If you are after a nice strong yet comfortable cloth feeling, go for the flax cloth, yes it’s vibrant but it will liven up any car and will be great all year round.

We have ranked the faux leather and the pink steering wheel cover as 3rd and 4th, they aren’t bad, they just aren’t as good as the other 2. They both feel good and are tight to your wheel so wont slip, they came packaged up folded though so there were a couple of downsides to compare but nothing time would sort out.

They are both a very good price and the microfiber/leather cover comes in a myriad of different colours, so check out what colours they have if you are after something different to suit your interior.

On arrival, it came packaged in a foam protector which means that it wasn’t creased nor bent before we fitted it to our cars steering wheel. This is a great positive as it means its easier to fit and looks great straight away.

Once fitted, which didn’t take long, we realised it was a very thick steering wheel cover. Thicker than the others by a few mm, which is a lot when you are used to a thin steering wheel. The grip that it offers is great though but if you have dainty hands, it may not be for you.

It is a handmade and sewn steering wheel cover and grips on to your steering wheel very tightly. You can feel that it was made well when using it in your car.

The leather feels good, is comfortable to hold and grip when steering and the stitching looks great. We have the all-black cover but it comes with different colour trims and thread if you want something to match your car. Like in the picture above it has a red trim holding it all together and it looks great.

By far the best feature we have seen is the rubber insert on the inside. It is grippy and made of rubber so when you are driving, you know it is secure and will not slip. Comparing it to the others, it has the best inside as the others were either plasticy or the same material on the outside. This is a well finished product and you can tell they have thought about the smaller yet important details.Pros

  • Best lookin leather steering wheel cover we have tested, really looks plush and there are other colours to choose from too
  • Once fitted, it isn’t going to slip around anywhere, which is a great safety feature
  • Not too expensive for something that you will be holding for all of your car journeys

Cons

  • If you have small hands, it may be too thick for you unless you have a very thin steering wheel already
  • Ours came in packaging that held it in a nice circle, ready to fit, we have read reviews that others came folded

Verdict

Best looking leather steering wheel cover we have tested, feels amazing in the hands and completely secure, worth every penny. Just choose the colour that will suit your car and if you are having difficulties fitting your steering wheel cover, check our tips at the top of this page.

A very colourful and vibrant steering wheel cover, we fitted it in warm weather, an unusually warm day for spring which helped a lot. Wrapped wonderfully around our little Fiat Pandas steering wheel, if you have a normal size steering wheel of 14.5-15″ diameter, it will fit for you too.

We covered our plasticy feeling steering wheel with it and it transformed it in to a much better and more colourful version. As well as protecting the steering wheel it also gives us a different feel to that of our original. If you want to change the feel of yours, we highly recommend this cover.

If your steering wheel gets too hot, this material will definitely stay cool in summer time.

It is made of coarse cloth flax, so definitely a different feel to rubber, leather or other fabrics you may be used to. If you want something different that is funky, this will be perfect for you.Pros

  • Unusual funky steering wheel cover for a vibrant soul
  • Great feeling, a little bit tougher to touch than the leather or cloth ones we tested but we still liked it
  • Managed a 4+ hour drive with it and it was great
  • Easy to fit, as long as its warm

Cons

  • If its cold, it might be hard to put the steering wheel cover on, like others though
  • Very funky looking cover, may not be for some
  • Great price

Verdict

An awesome summery feeling steering wheel cover, we absolutely love it. It fits our Panda perfectly, has made our steering wheel feel a little bit thicker/wider but the feel is great on the hands and fingers. Good grip offered, with no slip and at a good price. We only tested it in winter/spring time but it didnt feel too cold when we first get in the car and we think it would be nice and cool to touch in summer time and after long journeys.

Review of Microfiber and Leather Steering Wheel Cover

If you are after a leather steering wheel cover and something that adds a bit more density and thickness to your original steering wheel, you can’t go far wrong with this cover. We have the black steering wheel cover but it also comes in cream, red, grey and other colours too.

When we received the cover, it came folded up, which was a big problem at first, it made it harder to fit to the steering wheel compared to the pink steering wheel cover we tested and wasn’t perfectly circular because of how it had been packaged and posted. So once fitted you may see some creases around it, but there was some good news, after a few days use and driving each day for an hour or two, it sorted itself out and the creases dissapeared.

We are sure that this will last some time and look great as well. It says it is heat resistant, we have been driving in late winter/spring with it and it seems good for us. Only time will tell how well it does in summer.

The product does not come with a genuine leather stamp, so we don’t know whether it is fully leather or imitation, it does feel a lot better than our standard hard plastic steering wheel, so that is a bonus.

As well as black, it comes in different colours, if you are after something to match your interior, look no further.

If you are after a red leather steering wheel cover or grey, cream or fully coloured steering wheel cover, we highly recommend this product.Pros

  • Comes in an array of different colours
  • Feels great on the hand
  • Easy to fit
  • Looks really good

Cons

  • Comes packaged rolled up so not perfectly circular and has creases in it, these do come out slowly though
  • No leather stamp

Verdict

A great feeling leather steering wheel cover, makes your steering wheel feel a bit thicker which isn’t a problem with our small Fiat Panda wheel. Really nice grip around the wheel when turning, we highly recommend it.

This pink steering wheel cover is black and pink in colour, it’s made of a soft mesh, so its not a pink leather steering wheel but we have reviewed other steering wheel covers made of leather.

This is suitable for all normal and regular sized steering wheels, we tested it on our Fiat Panda and Peugeot 307cc and it fitted both perfectly. It took just seconds to put on, and you’ll find it just as easy.

As well as not being leather, this isn’t a pink fluffy steering wheel cover either, we looked at some but didn’t think they would be the best for grip in different driving conditions and duration.

It is definitely an upgrade from our plastic feeling steering wheel on the Panda. We tested for a week, only time will tell how long this steering wheel cover will last.Pros

If you are after a pink steering wheel cover, this is the one for you. It feels great on the hands when turning and driving your car. Much better than a fluffy pink steering wheel cover for driving long distances. It fitted both of our cars at 38cm wide, which is the standard steering wheel size and diameter.

  • Easy to fit to your steering wheel
  • Lovely pink and black design and colour
  • Great mesh and soft feel on your steering wheel once fitted
  • Really great price, actually the cheapest of the steering wheel covers we have reviewed

Cons

  • Just make sure it will fit your steering wheel, is it 38cm wide?
  • Pink is not for everyone.

Verdict

An awesome feeling and looking pink steering wheel cover. If you are after a funky colour and a better feeling on your cars steering wheel, this one is for you, at its price as well, it is a great investment.
